FLORIDA TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER

ST. JOHN BY IPHONE

My friend Chris Odom said it best when he purchased an iPhone 4 two years ago and decided to document his road trip out West with mobile phone imagery. "Shooting with the phone made me fall in love with photography all over again," he said. "It reconnected me with that initial joy I felt from my earliest imagemaking."

One of the most controversial tools for making pictures in the digital age, the iPhone has a simple camera interface and in the hands of a professional, it can be a quick and easy way to shoot, edit and share. Take a look at the Instagram feeds of Ben Lowy (Time Magazine), Michael Christopher Brown (National Geographic) and Landon Nordeman (New Yorker) and it's hard not to get excited.

I spent this week on location in the US Virgin Islands capturing high resolution imagery of the petroglyphs at Reef Bay on St. John as part of my continued collaboration with USF'S Alliance for Integrated Spatial technologies. The days were long and after hiking in our gear for an hour each day, we were insulated from the recreational opportunities that most people associate with Caribbean holidays. I had little time to shoot travel imagery but I made the most of my time in Coral Bay and Cruz Bay by leveraging the power of the iPhone camera.

Below are a few highlights from my iPhone. All were captured via the phone and edited with the phone on location with Snapseed.
